Post 12: MIA

In the poem "next to of course god america i" by E.E.Cummings we can get easily confused with the construction of his writing. To this I see the overall symbolism in the poem being about the use of young Americans being sent to fight for something they should not be flighting for. In the line "Why talk of beauty what could be more beautiful than these heroic happy dead who rushed like lions to the roaring slaughter they did not stop to think they died instead then shall the voice of liberty be mute?" I break this down as the young being groomed for war and to think that all of the worlds issues have to be policed by them, so dying for this cause is something that makes them fell heroic or happy. I see a similar symbolism in the song M.I.A. by Avenged Sevenfold, "Walk the city lonely memories that haunt are passing by a murderer walks your street tonight forgive me for my crimes, don't forget that I was so young fought so scared in the name of God and country." Through the song it shows the same face as Cummings poem but to the end it symbolizes of the walk that has to be made by those that did make it home, when they realize that it was all a lie. just like in the poem and the song they were both so young and fought for "God and Country".

  1. Wow, I think you did a very good job with this post. I think the song you chose was a perfect comparison, and I really enjoyed this. You chose two very similar, but meaningful overall meanings. Good job!

  2. Along with doing a good job for the blog post, I liked your choice of song and artist for this post. I have noticed that almost everyone used artists, that you may not here about in popular culture, so I that is really great. On another note, it is really sad to think about how many young men and women have died in war. It is something we don't often think about, but it does happen, so I think that e.e. cummings was bringing awareness to that, in his poem, among other things.

  3. You did a great job comparing these two pieces of work. Many people have gone to war for their country when they did not even know what was going on and what they were fighting for, unfortunately many of them were not able to figure out that war was not what they really wanted because they came back in body bags instead.
